What is Modal?

Modal fabric is a bio-based fabric that is made from spinning beech tree cellulose. Modal is generally considered a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and therefore the production process uses about 10-20 times less water.

Without diving too deeply into environmental science, modal justifiably gets recognized for its advanced textile manufacturing practices. It uses fewer toxic chemicals than viscose or polyester. It also requires about ten times less water than cotton for manufacturing and dyeing.

Cotton vs Modal: What is the Difference?
The difference between cotton and modal fabric is that modal is softer and silkier, while cotton is warmer and more breathable. The two fabrics also have different origins, as cotton is a natural fabric produced from the woolly bolls of the cotton plant and modal is a man-made fabric created from the pulp of beech trees. Both fabrics are popular choices for clothing, especially shirts and underwear.

Why Beech Trees?

Beech forests thrive in China and Central Europe. They are a natural and sustainable source for our products as they do not require artificial irrigation or planting. More than half the wood used in our products come from Ch and there neighbouring countries.

 How is Modal Made?

Why do we use Modal at Kapafamily Clothing?

The fibre produced from Beech trees is incredibly soft and feels like silk when worn - it has twice the softness of cotton and feels amazing against your skin.

Modal fabric is extremely hard-wearing and keeps its shape and finish, even after frequent washing. These properties make it useful as an underwear fabric. Its silky texture also makes it comfortable for close-fitting intimate wear and is breathable. Unlike garments made from synthetic fibres like nylon and polyester, Modal does not trap perspiration and odors.

Modal is up to 50 percent more absorbent than cotton, so clothes never feel sweaty and sticky.

Benefits to Using and Wearing Modal Fabric

Natural Stretch: Modal’s flexibility makes it ideal for items like t-shirts and athletic wear.

Ultra Soft Fabric: Modal has an incredibly soft touch.

Breathable Fabric: Modal is great for sportswear, base layers, t-shirts and underwear as the fabric’s weave is very breathable.

Water absorbent: Modal is 50% more absorbent than cotton..

Durable: Modal is very strong because of the tight weave and the long fibres.

Drapes well: Similar to rayon and other silk alternatives, modal has a beautiful drape that makes it ideal for our products.

Eco-friendly Fabric: Modal is made from regenerative plants and there are fewer chemicals used in the production process than with other types of rayon.

Doesn’t pill: The fabric resists pilling and has a smooth finish that makes it ideal for everyday wear and use.

Colour fast: The fabric absorbs dye in warm water and does not bleed dye during the laundering process.

Doesn’t shrink: Unlike most forms of rayon, modal is much less likely to shrink in the wash.
Biodegradable Fabric: Modal is completely biodegradable.

Doesn’t crease: Modal resists wrinkles and will stay smooth with minimal ironing.
